Proposition 8

From Lisa Leff - AP

LOS ANGELES (Nov. 5) - Voters put a stop to same-sex marriage in California, dealing a crushing defeat to gay-rights activists in a state they hoped would be a vanguard, and putting in doubt as many as 18,000 same-sex marriages conducted since a court ruling made them legal this year.

The gay-rights movement had a rough election elsewhere as well Tuesday. Ban-gay-marriage amendments were approved in Arizona and Florida, and Arkansas voters approved a measure banning unmarried couples from serving as adoptive or foster parents. Supporters made clear that gays and lesbians were their main target.

And there you have it, our community is the only group that I can think of that is OPENLY targeted with measures that not only support, but sanction -- discrimination.

Not so many years ago, a certain governor of Texas who later became president worked very hard to prevent gay couples from serving as adoptive and/or foster parents. I wrote him a nasty letter that someone in his administration responded to (although he did sign it). When I FIND that letter, I will scan it in and post it here.

Some of my letter said, "Hey, Governor, while you're at it, why don't you roast a few Jews and throw the blacks in the back of the bus where they belong." I'm sure he got the message, but he VIGOROUSLY defended his position about "marriage" and gays having basically NO rights. I'm sure I've been on some kind of watch list ever since.

I have never been an activist before, but this just might push me straight over the edge.
